The decision to undertake therapy is often a complex one. Therapy requires an investment of time and resources. In addition the prospect of relating to past and present difficulties can seem emotionally draining and raise the question of whether it is worth the effort.
I believe that it is often beneficial to come for a consultation to clarify whether therapy may help you. In this initial meeting I will work with you to understand what has led you to seek assistance and to determine if therapy may in fact help. If I think that therapy can indeed be beneficial we discuss the types of therapy available and expected time frames. We come to a decision regarding whether it is right to start therapy with myself or another professional. Such a meeting provides the necessary information for you to reach an informed decision.
Will therapy be beneficial to you?
Typically, therapy is beneficial if you believe that your’ personal or professional functioning is being undermined. Psychotherapy is likely to be useful when past events are impacting on your present wellbeing. It may be helpful in situations where one feels trapped or helpless, at a cross roads in life or overwhelmed by stress.
For every individual the motivation to start therapy varies. Different therapists will be able to provide different therapeutic options to help with your problem.
I find that it is best to firstly discuss together what your specific needs are in order to determine if the therapy that I can offer most fits your needs. Sometimes this can be done by a short phone conversation and sometimes a consultation is necessary.
